Para que tus orquídeas estén siempre sanas, lo mejor es que prevengas posibles enfermedades y plagas. Los puntos más importantes son:

For your orchids to be healthy, the best practice is to prevent posible diseases and pests.  The important factors are:

– water: it’s the principal cause of disease and death.  Be careful when you water!  Only water when needed, do not overwater and be sure your plant doesn’t dehydrate.  Always water in the morning to give your plant a chance to dry before the evening temperature drops.  The details on watering can be found in the Basic Care section, or in the cheat sheets of your specific genus.

– nutrition: remember that orchids in nature obtain their nutrients from the rain that pours down on them, after collecting organic matter and other elements in it’s way down.  Growing media, both organic and inorganic, won0t provide all the nutrients they need; you need to fertilize!!

– good ventilation: loaded and poorly ventilated environments are ideal, in combination with over watering, for the development of bacterial and fungal infections.

– light: they need light, but most of them can’t tolerate direct sunlight.  Even those who do like direct sunlight, during the most intense hours of sunlight, need some shadow to avoid sunburn.

– humidity: if your zone’s humidity levels are high, it’s very important that you have very good ventilation; if it is low, then you need to hydrate your plants more frequently and try to increase the humidity levels.  See our tips on how to increase humidity.

TIP: if you place your plants together, they will help each other and create a micro habitat with higher humidity levels.
